Museum of London

These designs were produced to inform discussions on how the existing structures can be re-used and substantially extended using modern construction techniques such as TopHuis®  which allows homes to be built above existing underused land and buildings.

If the landowner decides to keep Bastion House (as hoped by the local community and The C20th Society) they can help reduce the amount of carbon dioxide that would be emitted from a complete demolition and re-build by refurbishing and reusing the entire site. The old musuem podium will of course have large structure passing through (continuing down either side of the single lane of traffic below) but this can be a new dramatic feature of this refurbished space in it's next life.

The many high-rise, high-quality flats will provide a substantial return for the landowner and demonstrate good stewardship of the UK's carbon legacy. The final building height will depend on many factors including the structural engineers design, rights of light and cityscape studies, here we are showing 36 additional storeys (technically we could go much taller).

This option shows an elegantly proportioned tower with 200 no. homes with the typical sociable deck access that gives space to grow plants, allows people to get to know their neighbours and protects the building.
