West Kentish Town Estate
These designs were produced to enable an informed discussion between local community and the Council about an alternative to the demolition and rebuild of the existing estate.
We propose retaining the existing buildings to keep the embodied carbon, and build new homes above using TopHuis. This reduces the disruption to the existing residents and allows the conversion of the existing flats into high quality and desirable accommodation quickly and at lower cost than a 100% new build, using a TopHuis-like approach.
Upgrading the external envelope provides weather-tight homes that are warm in winter and cool in summer, allowing the building to be cleaned and maintained easily. The typical sociable deck access gives space to grow plants, improves biodiversity and allows people to get to know their neighbours whilst also protecting the building from extreme sun and rain. There are also additional escape routes in an emergency.
Send us an email if you would like to live in one of these or a similar home in Camden.
